LATEST: Kilkenny among 2,371 new cases of virus as 52 further deaths confirmed
A further 52 people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 2,371 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed.
It brings the overall death toll as a result of the virus to 2,870. There have now been 184,279 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 757 in Dublin, 237 in Cork, 154 in Waterford, 123 in Wexford, 114 in Louth, and the remaining 986 cases are spread across all other counties, including 28 further infections in Kilkenny.
An Taoiseach Michéal Martin confirmed today there will be no easing of level-5 restrictions at the end of January and suggested the current lockdown could remain in place until the end of February.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan said: “This weekend, we need everyone to stay the course with hand washing, covering coughs, wearing face coverings and keeping a 2m distance.
“In order to take care of each other, we need all to stay at home, except for essential reasons, to minimise the spread of COVID-19 to ourselves and our loved ones,” he concluded.
