Green light for large new supermarket in county Kilkenny town
Supermarket giant Aldi has been granted planning permission by Kilkenny County Council to build a new store in Castlecomer.
The store will be located on the site of the town’s former Creamery in the centre of Castlecomer. It will be Aldi’s sixth store in Kilkenny city and county.
The former Glanbia site, which has lain vacant for several years, will be developed by Greenstripe Limited and will feature the Aldi store as the anchor tenant. The Creamery’s historic three-storey mill building, a protected structure, will also be preserved and fully refurbished.
It is expected the new supermarket will open in 2022. Its development is part of a €160 million investment by Aldi in its Irish store network.
The 52,500 square feet development on the eight-acre site create up to 100 jobs during the construction period and 20 permanent positions upon opening.
There will be 229 car parking spaces available for customers within the overall development and a further four bicycle parking stations on site catering for up to 50 bikes. Aldi will also provide two free-to-use electric vehicle charging points outside the store.
The 1,315 sqm store will be constructed in Aldi’s award-winning Project Fresh design and will be powered by 100% green electricity.
