Here’s how the process works. Under the care of a consultant gynaecologist, the woman is given fertility medications to stimulate her ovaries and boost her follicles, or egg count. The eggs produced are collected by fertility doctors and frozen in the laboratory using a method known as vitrification. The eggs can then be stored until the woman is prepared to conceive a child, then the eggs are thawed and used for IVF.

This technology was originally developed to help women whose fertility was threatened by chronic illness or the treatments for it, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
