‘I was on the verge of tears all day and I just wanted to go home’ – Kilkenny cancer campaigner endures roughest week yet

Cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan has admitted to feeling lonely after enduring “a very rough few days” while undergoing treatment for her illness in the USA.

The Mooncoin mother-of-two, who is currently in the US undergoing a trial cancer treatment, took to Instagram yesterday to say she had been very ill this week, on the verge of tears and in need of friends or family from home to be by her side.

Vicky, who was undergoing the ninth round of the new cancer treatment called M7824 at the National Institute of Health facility in Maryland, has been in the US since early January

In her latest video, the 46-year-old said: “I’ve had a s**t few days to be honest. I became very ill on Monday, the day before treatment and was vomiting all day and had to go back into the hospital on Monday evening to get rehydrated on IV fluids.

“To say it was an awful day would be an understatement. I was on the verge of tears all day and I just wanted to go home or to at least see someone from home who could support me.

“I’m fine now and feeling a helluva lot better today. I think these were probably the worst two days that I have put down since I got here almost 5 months ago.”

A visibly tired Vicky mustered up the energy to thank everyone for their support. However, a short time later she posted another video explaining how much the support from home means to her, and how grateful she is for it.

“I just wanted to post a quick video to thank ALL of you here on Instagram and on Vicky’s Tribe on Facebook for literally keeping me going and for reminding me of why I am over here in the US on my own.

On weeks like this when I am having done very rough days, I find it very difficult to not feel all alone and to not feel sorry for myself…BUT your messages of support and your lovely comments really help to pull me through on these dark days,” Vicky added.
