One of Kilkenny’s best-known schools to be demolished to make way for brand new 37-class building

A Kilkenny city’ secondary school will be completely demolished to make way for a brand new 37-classroom building.

It comes after Kilkenny County Council gave the green light to plans lodged by the Board of Management of Presentation Secondary School.

Under the plans, the existing school on the Outrath Road in Loughboy will demolished. It its place, a new two-storey state-the-art facility will be built. The 10,276sqm school will consist of 37 new classrooms, a general purpose hall, a PE hall, a special needs unit, library, staff rooms and “all ancillary accommodation”, including a bin store, electricity substation and storage shed.

Works to the new school grounds will consist of the provision of a half size GAA pitch with nets, two multiple use pitches, a basketball court, play and horticultural areas.

The development will also include modifications to the existing vehicular and pedestrian access to the school to incorporate new entrance gates and internal access roadway footpath, an internal drop-off area for both cars and busses and the provision of 93 car parking spaces, 122 sheltered bicycle parking spaces for students and 28 bicycle spaces for visitors.

To allow for the construction of the new building while the existing schoo building remains operational, permission has also been granted for “enabling works to include for the re-routing of ESB cables on the site and temporary drop off and staff parking arrangements”.
