Vital project to help fish migration on Kilkenny river nets €120,000 funding
A project to improve fish migration on the River Nore has been allocated €120,000 in State funding.
The funding is part of €770,000 awarded to 17 projects to support fisheries conservation across the country.
Kilkenny is one of 11 counties to benefit under the ‘Habitats and Conservation Scheme 2021’ launched by the Inland Fisheries Ireland, the state agency with responsibility for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish and habitats.
In Kilkenny, €120,000 in funding has been announced for the construction of a rock ramp on an ‘impassable’ weir. The aim of the funding is to improve fish migration upstream and downstream for salmon, eel and lamprey at Brett’s Weir, on the River Nore.
The other conservation projects awarded funding by Environment Minister Eamon Ryan are in neighbouring Carlow, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Laois, Limerick, Mayo, Wexford, Westmeath and Wicklow.
