New state-of-the-art facilities to make big splash in Kilkenny city centre
A site in Kilkenny city centre is set to undergo a huge transformation to keep up with the growing trend for outdoor water activities.
State-of-the-art facilities will be developed at the site of the Kilkenny Water Sports Hub at County Hall on John St as part of a €19 million investment nationwide by Fáilte Ireland.
The money will be put towards providing changing facilities, a storage area, secure lockups and bathrooms on the site.
The Water Sports Hub is one of 22 locations nationwide country where water-based activities are a key visitor attraction. The funding covers both inland and coastal areas where water-based activities are growing in popularity.
Speaking about the investment, Tourism Minister Catherine Martin said: “The significant increase in people enjoying outdoor water-based activities such as kayaking, surfing, paddle-boarding and open water swimming is expected to continue to grow year on year, and not just during the summer months.
“Ireland is world-class when it comes to providing water-based activities which are enjoyed by local communities and visitors along our stunning coastline, rivers and lakes.
“We know the appeal of the outdoors will continue to grow post-COVID19 so we must ensure the Irish experience meets and exceeds visitor expectations,” Minister Martin added.
