Carrick-on-Suir’s Sam Bennett takes green jersey after sprint to final stage victory in Paris

Carrick-on-Suir’s Sam Bennett won the sprint finish on the Champs-Elysées to secure the Tour de France points classification this evening.

The final 122km stage with eight laps of the Champs-Elysées, saw Bennett seal a dream race with a sprint finish.

Bennett began the day with a 55-point lead over Peter Sagan. The German needed the stage win as well as the intermediate sprint to overhaul the Irishman and win the jersey for an eigth occasion.

The German however did not even contest the sprint, won by Bora-Hansgrohe’s Max Schachmann, with Bennett fifth to add 11 points to his lead and ensure his points classification victory.

The 29-year-old becomes the first Irish cyclish since fellow Carrick man Sean Kelly in 1989 to take the green jersey.

21-year-old Tadej Pogocar became the youngest overall winner of the Tour de France since Henri Cornet in 1904.
