Cartoon Saloon’s new hit feature to light up Kilkenny’s city streets this weekend
Pre-release viewings, a sketching tour of the city and projections Cartoon Saloon’s latest feature length film ‘Wolfwalkers’ onto the Castle are among the highlights of the third Kilkenny Animated festival which takes place this weekend.
This year’s edition will centre on Wolfwalkers, the much anticipated feature film set in Kilkenny which is created by the world-renowned and multi Oscar-nominated local animation studio.
This year’s festival has had to be pared back due to Covid-19 restrictions, but organisers have been innovative in how they are bringing the wonder of animation to the streets of Kilkenny.
Numerous screenings of Wolfwalkers will take place over the weekend, ahead of the film’s much-anticipated debut on AppleTV over the coming weeks. Talks with directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart will be held, as well as panels with assistant director Mark Mullery, art director Maria Pareja, and Eva Whitaker, the voice of Wolfwalkers star Medbh.
A number of outdoor events will take place over the weekend, including the Wolfwalkers’ walking tour, in which members of team that put the film together will guide participants around the medieval and historic building of Kilkenny, used to inspire to visual look and backgrounds for the film. Those on the tour will then get a chance to draw themselves and, taking inspiration from tour, create some settings of their own.
During the course of the weekend, and for the remainder of October, scenes and imagery from the film will be projected onto the walls of Kilkenny Castle and will be visible from John’s Bridge and Canal Walk.
