Cats go down fighting in bad-tempered final round of Hurling League in Wexford
DAVY Fitzgerald’s side battled back from a five-point half-time deficit to overcome Kilkenny at Wexford Park today.
Brian Cody’s men looked to be in a comfortable position at the break, but with the wind at their backs Wexford producing a barnstorming comeback in what was an often-ill-tempered clash.
The final round of the National Hurling League was played in atrocious conditions after last week’s game was called off. And the temperamental conditions seemed to rub off on the players as a number of skirmishes broke out in the first half.
Things were looking good for the Cats early in the first half when Liam Blanchfield hit the back of the net with just three minutes gone. Walter Walsh pointed seven minutes later to put Kilkenny five points clear of Davy Fitzgerald’s men.
The margin remained the same at the break but Wexford came flying out of the traps from the restart.
Lee Chin had a big second half, hitting three points from play. And Wexford were well on their way to victory when Cathal Dunbar prodded over the line for their only goal with three minutes of normal time remaining, before Colin Delaney was sent off on a straight red card late on.
