Controversial plans to erect 50ft 5G mast in Kilkenny village back on table
A national telecommunications and broadband provider has appealed the local authority’s decision to refuse controversial plans to build a 50ft high 5G mast in a Kilkenny village.
Last month Kilkenny County Council refused to grant Eircom Limited planning permission to build a 15 metre-high free-standing communications structure at Archers Field in Kilmaganny.
The council had concerns about the chosen site Eircom hoped to build the 50ft mast upon. It asked the broadband provider to explore other sites in the area and if the mast would be able to provide a 5G service.
Eircom told the council there were no other suitable sites in the area and that although the new mast could provide a 5G service, there were no plans to do so as yet.
After examining the application, the council refused permission for the new mast structure.
Eircom has now appealed the council’s decision to An Bord Pleanála. The national planning authority is expected to decide on whether the development can go ahead before the end of July.
