Coronavirus confirmed in Republic as male patient in east of country receives ‘appropriate medical care’

A man who is located in the eastern part of Ireland is being treated for coronavirus, the Department of Health has said.

It is the first case of Covid-19 confirmed in the Republic of Ireland and the patient is currently receiving “appropriate medical care”.

It is not believed that the man contracted the virus from the woman who is being treated in Northern Ireland but rather he became infected in northern Italy.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer with the Department of Health, said: “This is not unexpected. We have been preparing for this eventuality for many weeks now.

“Public health protocols have been in place since January and are operating effectively.”
