CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: First person in Ireland dies from Covid-19

A patient suffering from Covid-19 in the East of the country has died from the virus.

According to the Irish Times, the person, who is believed to be elderly, died earlier today in hospital where they had been treated in the last few days.

The woman is understood to have had underlying illness and was treated in hospital initially for respiratory problems.

The first Covid-19 case in the Republic of Ireland was confirmed on February 29 and there are now 34 confirmed cases.

The National Public Health Emergency Teams will give an update on the situation at its daily briefing this evening.
