Restoration of historic church among €250,000 funding boost for Kilkenny town

The Government has allocated €57,000 for vital restoration works at St Mary’s Church in Callan.
The funding is part of an overall €7 million investment in projects across the country under the Government’s Historic Towns Initivative 2021.
The grant for St Mary’s Church will enable the completion of specialist conservation works to iron and masonry on the church’s boundary.
It comes hot on the heels of €193,500 awarded to the Moat Field Nature & Heritage Trail within Westcourt Demesne, Moat, Ballylarkin last week as part of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
The funding was announced by Kilkenny TD and Heritage Minister Malcolm Noonan.
Minister Noonan said: “I was very pleased to secure an increase of over 50% in our heritage budget for this year. The schemes announced this week will support communities and towns across the country in protecting and preserving the heritage in their care.
“I would like to thank the Heritage Council for its role in delivering many of these important schemes, including its support to heritage organisations impacted by the Covid-19 crisis,” Minister Noonan added.
