Drunk dad armed with knife barricaded himself inside Kilkenny home with three kids
DETAILS of a terrifying incident in which a man armed with a knife barricaded himself into his Kilkenny home with his children following a domestic row have emerged.
The events, which took place more than a month ago, are detailed in the most recent monthly report by the Garda Commissioner to the Policing Authority.
On April 8 last, local gardai responded to a call from a woman who said her partner had come home intoxicated and that a heated argument had ensued.
According to the report, the woman said she was “in fear for herself and her three young children”.
The report said that when gardaí arrived the man had “become aggressive” and armed himself with a large kitchen knife. He then threatened to stab the officers.
The woman and the gardai were forced to leave the house, and the man then barricaded himself inside with the three young children.
Gardai called for back-up. Members of the Armed Support Unit and a Garda negotiator arrived at the scene a short time later.
Thankfully, the incident ended peacefully after the man put down the knife and gave himself up.
The report concludes: “Following their arrival and a short period of negotiation, the male surrendered himself.”
