Firefighter arrested for drink driving while on duty in Kilkenny city
A FIREFIGHTER was arrested after he was found to be over the limit while driving a fire truck in Kilkenny city.
The firefighter was stopped at a checkpoint over the bank holiday.
He was driving a fire truck on the Callan Road at around lunchtime on Sunday when he was breathalysed by gardai.
KilkennyNow.ie has learned the firefighter was only over the limit by a very small margin. ‘Specified’ drivers such as firefighters have a much lower legal alcohol threshold than ordinary drivers.
The firefighter was subsequently released without charge.
A local Garda source said the man’s alcohol levels were so low, even for a ‘specified’ driver, that the case does not need to be dealt with by the courts. A fixed penalty notice was issued to the firefighter instead.
