Five Kilkenny towns and villages to get outdoor makeover

Five towns and villages across Kilkenny will benefit from a new €7 million fund to upgrade their streetscapes and shopfronts.

Thomastown, Mullinavat, Castlecomer, Goresbridge and Urlingford have all been selected for the Streetscape Enhancement Initiative, which is to make our rural towns and villages more attractive to live, work and visit.

Initial details of the funding were announced by Kilkenny TD John Paul Phelan.

As part of the initiative, property owners are encouraged to paint building in vibrant colour. Murals will be commissioned, and tradition and histroic shopfronts will be upgraded.

The funding will also be used to provide street planting, shrubbery, trees and flower boxes, illuminate architectural features and erect canopies and street furniture.

Welcoming the funding, Deputy Phelan (pictured) said: “This fund will provide a welcome boost to rural communities and make a huge difference to our local buildings and streetscapes.”
