LATEST: Pensioner found at her Kilkenny home may have been dead for some time, man (20s) remains in custody

Gardai are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination in relation to the discovery of the body of a pensioner found dead at her home in Kilkenny city yesterday evening.

The woman’s remains were discovered at a house in the Maudlin Street area of the city at around 6pm yesterday.

Gardai believe she may have been dead at the property for some time before her remains were discovered. The autopsy is expected to be completed by mid-afternoon.

Gardai have sealed off the property for technical examination and investigations are ongoing. A search is currently underway at another location in the city in relation to the death.

A man in his 20s remains in custody this lunchtime in connection with the woman’s death.

A Garda spokesperson said today: “A man remains in custody at Kilkenny Garda Station on suspicion of murder and is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“The woman’s body has been removed from the scene to Dublin City Morgue where a post mortem will be completed by State Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan later today.

“The Technical Bureau remain at the scene and ancillary searches of the area are ongoing.
