Green light for new development of social and affordable homes in Kilkenny town

The construction of 25 new social and affordable homes in a county Kilkenny town can now get underway after the national planning authority gave the scheme the green light.

In July Kilkenny County Council lodged plans with An Bord Pleanála seeking permission to build the development on lands off Lady’s well and the Newtown Road in Thomastown.

As part of the scheme, the council were looking to build 17 houses and eight apartments on a one-hectare site close to the centre of the town and Grennan College Secondary School.

To make space for the development, an existing derelict house and shed adjacent to Lady’s Well Street would be demolished and road realignment and widening works would take place on Newtown Road to cater for the extra traffic.

The intention is to allocate the homes to housing applicants on the approved housing list for Thomastown, in accordance with the scheme of letting priorities. However the council has not ruled out the sale of affordable homes in the scheme to qualified applicants.

An Bord Pleanála examined the proposal and granted the council permission to proceed with the development.
