Historic Kilkenny pub to make way for new apartments

Plans to transform a historic building in a Kilkenny village into a new apartment development have been given the green light.

Developers Walsh Sheehan Investments Limited plans to build six new residential units on the site on The Square in Johnstown, better known as The Ouncel pub, have been approved by Kilkenny County Council.

The local authority approved Walsh Sheehan’s application for a change of use from commercial zoning to residential zoning.

In July the council sought further clarity about certain aspects of the plan after concerns were rasied over parking and right-of-way near to development.

Walsh Sheehan Investments reverted with a detailed 18-page document addressing their concerns in late October. Local authority planners have now approved the application.

The Ouncel will be transformed into four one-bedroom apartments and two two-bedroom, two-storey detached homes.

As a part of the development, most of the existing structure will be knocked, although parts of the existing façade will be retained.
