Hundreds of Kilkenny teachers to strike over ‘pay discrimination’ in election week

Hundreds of teachers in Kilkenny are to take part in a one-day strike called in the week running up to the general election.

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland has today announced it is to take strike action on Tuesday, February 4 over what they are calling ‘pay discrimination.’

The TUI represents more than 19,000 members across Ireland’s second-level schools, colleges of further and adult education and Institutes of Technology/Technological Universities.

The strike follows a ballot taken by members last October where they overwhelmingly, 92%, in favour of industrial action which it was agreed upon would include strike action this February unless the Government addressed the issue of pay discrimination.

“We have exhausted every avenue open to us to bring this matter to resolution,” TUI President Seamus Lahart said in a statement released today.

We have been left with no choice but to take strike action over the ongoing scandal of pay discrimination.”

The industrial action will affect more than 1,100 places of education across the country.
