Top of the World: Record breaking Kilkenny athlete Mary FitzGerald wins two gold medals
KILKENNY athlete Mary FitzGerald did her county proud as she took home two gold medals from the 2019 IWAS World Games in UAE.
The Callan native and Gowran AC member won gold in the women’s javelin event on day one of the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports event.
She followed this up with another gold in the shot put on day two.
Mary tweeted: “Delighted to finish Day 1 of competition at the 2019 IWAS World Games in Sharjah, UAE, with gold in the women’s javelin!!”
She later added: “Wrapping up my second day of competition at the 2019 IWAS World Games with a gold medal in shot put and a new Irish record.”
Many members of Gowran AC have been paying tribute to Mary’s fantastic achievement on social media over the weekend.
Meanwhile it was a busy weekend for Gowran AC at the Juvenile Leinster Indoors in Athlone, with the club taking home a haul of 10 medals – three gold, three silver and three bronze – from the event.
