Kilkenny Castle named one of ’10 Most Beautiful’ in the world
KILKENNY Castle has been named in a prestigious new list of the world’s ‘10 Most Beautiful Castles’.
Our medieval marvel is named alongside Versailles Palace and England’s Windsor Castle in the list compiled by the Architectural Digest.
Kilkenny’s inclusion on the list is a fantastic coup for the city and the local tourism sector.
Kilkenny Castle came in eighth on the list, just behind Prague Castle and ahead of Bojnice Castle in Slovakia and Carcassonne in France.
The Architectural Digest said of Kilkenny Castle: “Built in 1195 by William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, this castle overlooks the River Nore and was used to guard the important river crossing for more than 900 years. Throughout the history of the castle, the site was renovated several times with the changing of owners, making it a mixture of various architectural styles. Today the castle is open to the public to explore the gardens and parklands, and the medieval castle.”
