LATEST: 53 more hospitalised as 1,380 new cases of virvus confirmed
A further 53 people have been hospitalised after contracting Covid-19.
It comes as the Department of Health confirmed 1,380 new cases of the virus this evening.
The number of patients in hospital with Covid-19 now stands at 459.
Of these, 74 are being treated in intensive care for the virus.
Speaking earlier, Health Service executive (HSE) chief executive Paul Reid said there has been an increase of around 40% in Covid-19 hospitalisations in the space of just three weeks.
He told RTÉ’s This Week, that 40% of people in hospital with Covid are below the age of 65 and that of those in ICU, 65% are unvaccinated.
