LATEST: Almost 1,200 new cases of virus confirmed

A further 1,181 people have contracted the coronavirus, the Department of Health, confirmed this evening.

That’s 213 less than yesterday’s figures, despite a record number of people attending centres around the country to be tested for the virus.

And the number of patients being treated in hospital with the virus now stands at 309, down 12 since yesterday.

Of these patients, 60 are in intensive care, an increase of two.

It was also revealed today that a total of 5,155 people have so far died as a result of Covid-19 in Ireland.
