LATEST: Highest number of cases of virus in 10 weeks amid Delta surge

A further 581 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening, an increase of 215 on yesterday’s figures. It is the highest number of daily reported cases in two and a half months.

The Department of Health reported 60 people are being treated for the virus in hospitals, six more than yesterday’s total.

17 people are now being treated in Intensive Care Units, one more than yesterday’s figure.

However, the department warned the number of cases may change due to future data validation amid the disruption caused by the cyber attack on the HSE’s system.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “We are continuing to see an increase in the incidence rate of COVID-19, and so, it is important that we do as much as possible to control the spread of the disease as the vaccination programme opens to all adults over the age of 18.

“The continuing high levels of adherence to the public health advice, high levels of vaccine uptake and community engagement with testing centres around the country are all reasons to be positive. If you display any symptoms of COVID-19, it is important that you isolate straight away and come forward for a PCR test.”
