LATEST: HSE chief warns of ‘most difficult winter’ as almost 2,500 new cases of virus confirmed
A further 2,427 more people have contracted the coronavirus, the Department of Health confirmed this evening.
And the number of patients now being treated in hospitals with the virus now stands at 449, down eight on yesterday. Of these 93 are being treated in ICU, a rise of three from yesterday.
The latest cases were confirmed as HSE chief executive Paul Reid warned our ailing health service is facing into one of the most difficult winters in many years.
Mr Reid said Covid-19 is “putting severe pressure” on Ireland’s hospital system.
He told RTÉ’s Katie Hannon: “It’s a real challenge for us, particularly as we head into winter, this is going to be probably one of the most difficult winters we faced for many years, so it is difficult for us.”
