LATEST: Kilkenny among 866 new cases of virus as six further deaths confirmed

A further six people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 866 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The overall death toll as a result of the virus now stands at 1,902. There are now 60,297 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 242 are in Dublin, 166 in Cork, 56 in Donegal, 54 in Galway, 44 in Meath with the remaining 304 cases are spread across another 20 counties, including five new infections in Kilkenny.

The latest cases were confirmed as Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald confirmed that a senator and two officials in the North have resigned after it emerged that three party offices incorrectly received payments from a Covid-19 grant scheme.

Ms McDonald said she accepted the resignations of the three individuals responsible for the accounts and for not returning the money.

The three party members who have resigned are Senator Elisha McCallion and the Chair of Upper Bann Comhairle Ceantair and another party official in West Tyrone.

Ms McDonald said: “The failure to immediately return grants erroneously paid into Sinn Féin accounts is a most serious situation. As party leader I wish to acknowledge and apologise for these failures.”
