By COLIN BARTLEY

A GROUP of 40 volunteers with an interest in the environment has built Kilkenny’s first home composting demonstration site.

This past weekend, 40 graduates of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) master composting course built Kilkenny’s first home composting demonstration site in Inistioge.

The programme, funded by the EPA’s ‘Stop Food Waste’ project with the support of Kilkenny County Council, took place over five weeks. The volunteers were trained in all aspects of food waste prevention and composting.

The demonstration site is a green waste compost demonstration site and is managed and maintained by the Inistioge Tidy Towns Committee.

Councillor Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, officially opened the site and congratulated the people who had undertaken the programme.

Cllr Cleere said: “the site was a testament to the drive of the Inistioge Tidy Towns Committee in moving forward on new environmental projects which benefit the community.”
