LATEST: More cases of virus in Kilkenny, 217 new infections confirmed, 17% of Leaving Cert grades to be reduced

There has been no further coronavirus related deaths but 217 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The overall death toll as a result of the virus remains at 1,777. There are now 29,025 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country.

Kilkenny is among the counties to record new infections, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The new cases were confirmed as the Department of Education announced that just under 17% of Leaving Cert grades calculated by schools will be reduced under the Calculated Grades process.

The Department said trends show the national standardisation has resulted in a low number of grades being reduced, in the majority of cases by just one grade.

In a move that will be welcomed by disadvantaged schools, the Department said it did not rely on schools’ previous performances in its national standardisation process.

This decision was approved by the Cabinet today.
