LATEST: No deaths but 102 new cases of virus, Government to update ‘Green List’ of safe travel destinations

There has been no further coronavirus related deaths but 102 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

There overall death toll as a result of the virus remains at 1,777. There are now 29,774 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The latest cases were confirmed as Tánaiste Leo Varadkar announced the Government will update its Green List of countries deemed to be safe to travel to at the end of the month.

On August 4 the Government removed five countries from the Green List: Malta, Cyprus, Gibraltar, San Marino and Monaco.

The countries currently on the list are Estonia, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Slovakia. People returning from these countries will not have to restrict their movements for a 14-day period.

Speaking in Dublin today, Mr Varadkar said the Government’s approach to international travel be updated in tandem with the publication of the medium-term roadmap on dealing with Covid-19 later this month.

Meanwhile, new figures from the Central Statistics Office published today shows the economy contracted by 6.1% during the second quarter of 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions – the biggest quarterly drop ever recorded.

This means the economy is now officially in recession after an initial estimate that it expanded in the first quarter was revised downwards.
