LATEST: Over 5,000 new cases of virus as NPHET calls for more restrictions

A further 5,419 people have contracted Covid-19, the Department of Health confirmed this evening.

However, there has been a decrease in the numbers being treated in hospital and ICU facilities.

There are now 528 people in hospital who have tested positive for the virus, down 17 since yesterday. Of these 110 are in ICU, a drop of seven.

The latest figures come as the National Public Health Emergency (Nphet) advised the Government there should be a return to more restrictions, including the numbers of household visits at Christmas, reduced capacity at indoor events and an earlier closing time for the hospitality sector.

The Cabinet this evening accepted Nphet’s recommendations on new restrictions in the lead up to Christmas.

Chief Medical Dr Tony Holohan’s team advised introducing new curbs on hospitality and household visits as soon as possible. They recommended that the new restrictions remain in place until January 9.
