LATEST: ‘Perfect storm’ – hospital and ICU numbers rise as almost 17,000 new cases of virus confirmed

A further 16.986 people have contracted Covid-19, the Department of Health confirmed today.

And number of people with Covid-19 in hospitals has risen to 804, an increase of 87 compared to the same time yesterday morning.

This day last week there were 461 people in hospital with Covid-19.

The number of people in intensive care units with Covid-19 has risen six since yesterday, with 93 patients with the coronavirus receiving care in ICUs around the country.


The latest cases were confirmed as the General Secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, Phil Ní Sheaghdha, warned overcrowded hospitals and staff absent due to Covid is the “perfect storm”.

Ms Ní Sheaghdha told RTÉ’s News at One hospitals are “very, very stretched” and “very difficult”,
