LATEST: Reports suggest real level of infections could be as high as 60,000 a day

A further 21,384 people have contracted Covid-19, the he Department of Health confirmed today.

According to the department, there are now 984 people in hospital with the virus, up 67 since yesterday. Of these, 83 are in intensive care, which is unchanged.
Health Service Executive chief Paul Reid said the health service remains under strain because of the coronavirus pandemic. But he added people’s adherence to public health guidelines was reducing the spread of infection.
