LATEST: Taoiseach says its ‘clear as daylight’ unvaxxed are jeopardising health of others as over 5,000 new cases of virus confirmed

A further 5,156 people have contracted Covid-19, the Department of Health confirmed this evening.

And the number of patients now being treated for the virus in hospital now stands at 503.

Of these, 110 are in intensive care units.

The latest figures were confirmed as Taoiseach Micheál Martin urged unvaccinated people to get the jab.

He said it is “clear as daylight” that if people do not get vaccinated they are jeopardising their personal health and the health of others.

And he insisted the Government is being active in raising awareness of the need to get vaccinated, saying over a thousand people a day are now coming forward to get first and second doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

“We had 10,000 people come forward last week for first doses and the same number for second doses,” the Taoiseach added.
