LATEST: Two more deaths and 234 new cases of virus, warning Ireland now at start of ‘second wave’
Two more people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 234 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
The overall death toll from the virus now stands at 1,794. There are now 33,675 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 103 cases are in Dublin, 30 in Donegal, 22 in Galway, 21 in Cork, 13 in Wicklow, 12 in Louth, 9 in Kildare, 8 in Meath, with the remaining 17 spread across 10 counties.
The latest cases were confirmed as a specialist in infectious diseases, Professor Sam McConkey, warned that Ireland is at the beginning of “a second wave” of the virus.
Speaking at today’s meeting of the Oireachtas Special Committee on Covid-19 Response, Prof McConkey said physical distancing is needed to “crush the curve into the ground”.
Prof McConkey also warned that it will be impossible to prevent the re-entry of the virus into nursing homes unless it is controlled in the community.
