LEINSTER FINAL: Wexford overcome Cats in tense and thrilling finale
WEXFORD are the champions of Leinster for the first time in 15 years after they overcame Brian Cody’s Kilkenny in another tense, nail-biting encounter between the neighbours at Croke Park.
Precious little separated the sides, who drew level on no fewer than 10 occasions throughout the match before Wexford pulled clear in the closing stages.
A penalty dispatched by Wexford goalkeeper Mark Fanning in the 63rd minute was the difference between on the scoreboard in the end.
Kilkenny will be bitterly disappointed at not being able to keep pace with Wexford at the death, but the Model County earned their win the hard way with a superb display of grit and skill.
They shot just three wides in the entire game and Lee Chin was flawless from dead balls as Conor McDonald (0-04) and Rory O’Connor (0-03) up front.
TJ Reid was instrumental in keeping Kilkenny fighting until the final seconds, but the day belonged to Davy Fitzgerald’s men who ran out deserved winners in the end.
