Memo to Kilkenny DIY fans: Go easy with the paint

There has been a surge in DIY across Waterford with many people working from home or staying home to conform with Covid-19 restrictions.

People have been buying a lot of paint – too much paint, according to Waterford City and County Council.

It has joined with the local authorities of Kilkenny and Carlow in a campaign to make the community aware of how to calculate the right amount of paint required for any job.

The council is also providing advice on how to store paint and the correct disposal method for any leftovers. This includes raising awareness of how to calculate the amount of paint required and how to properly store and dispose of paint.

This project will include an investigation into the amount of paint tins brought to civic amenity sites in Kilkenny, Carlow and Waterford and there is to be a social media campaign to educate householders about the proper disposal of paint and paint storage.

The Environment Directorate Report also reveals that meetings with community groups, such as Tidy Towns, are now being held online in place of face to face meetings.

A regional anti- litter campaign is in place to highlight the effects of litter on our roadsides and to ask road users to bring their litter home with them.  This campaign, which appeals to the public to call out litter louts, is being promoted on radio, social media and newspapers.

It is hoped that this will help to reduce the amount of litter on our roadsides.
