Construction on new cath lab to serve Kilkenny and south east to begin this month

A start date for work on the second cath lab to serve Kilkenny and the south east has finally been confirmed.

Construction on the long-awaited cardiac facility at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) will begin on May 17. The lab is expected to be operational in September 2022.

Long-time campaigner and Waterford TD Matt Shanahan made the announcement on social media, confirming: “After what has been more than a marathon, a building start date for the new Cath lab at UHW has been confirmed as May 17th.

“Handover is expected in June 2022 with operational use expected in September 2022. As said before not the beginning of the end but the end of the beginning!

“New staff recruitment now becomes the next priority so that the service hours can expand as quickly as possible,” Deputy Shanahan concluded.

The new lab is estimated to cost roughly €5 million to construct and fit out and will have the capacity for both diagnostic and interventional work.

The facility will also have a new recovery and day ward.
