A company has lodged plans for a new wind farm development in north Kilkenny.

The application by Briskalagh Ltd seeks to build seven turbines across several townlands near Tullaroan, including Acragar, Ballyconra, Ballycuddihy, Ballyroe, Ballyroe (Grace), Ballyroe (Maher), Baunaniska, Boherkyle, Briskalagh, Brittas, Clone, Coolnapisha, Curraghduff, Freshford, Freshford Lots, Graigueswood, Grange, Huntstown, Kilmanagh, Knockeenglass, Knockown, Moatpark, Monabrika, Monavadaroe, Moneenaun, Oldtown, Oldtownhill, Parksgrove, Picketstown, Rathealy, Sart, Sweethill, Tobernapeastia, and Upperwood Demesne.

According to the planning application, the wind turbines will be 185 metres high, with a rotor blade diameter of 163 metres.

The company is also seeking permission to build a “permanent 38kV substation compound (control building with welfare facilities, all associated electrical plant and apparatus, security fencing, underground cabling, storage containers, wastewater holding tank, site drainage and all ancillary works”.

The proposal is being explored by the Cork-based Enerco Energy Ltd.

On its website, the company says the “potential development would provide a significant contribution to achieving the country’s renewable energy targets and assist in reducing Ireland’s dependency on fossil fuels”.

They added: “It would also generate direct and indirect local jobs and provide investment in the area through local authority rates / contributions and a community benefit fund which would be made available to fund local initiatives as decided by the local community.”

A decision on the proposed development is due in early December.
