Trees to be removed from popular Kilkenny city walkway

Trees will be removed on Kilkenny’s popular Lacken Walk in order to facilitate works to widen the trail.

However, local councillor Joe Malone insisted the trees would be replaced after the works take place.

Recently it was announced that Lacken Walk will benefit from funding under the Governent’s Active Travel Fund.

Cllr Malone said he recieved assurances from a senior engineer in Kilkenny County Council that the trees removed to facilitate the works will be replaced.

The Fianna Fáil councillor told KCLR: “They’re going to take out very few of them if they can but they also have to extend the walkway so if they do take out trees they will replace them near enough to where they were.

“So hopefully now in the next few months this will start, we’ve got funding from national government and the money is there now and the county council will send out a design team now and it’ll come back to the council then, the municipal district, and we’ll make a decision on it so hopefully now in the near future this will take place.”
