Warning as drink-driver caught over four times legal limit on Kilkenny road

Gardai in Kilkenny have once again been busy taking dangerous drivers off the county’s road this week.

One driver who was found to be driving under the influence of cocaine and cannabis had his car seized as it was neither insured nor taxed, while another driver was found to be four-times over the legal alcohol limit.

In the early hours of last Monday morning members of the Kilkenny Roads Policing Unit were on a Covid-19 patrol near Callan and stopped a car. The vehicle was been driven by a learner permit holder. On inspection the gardai found the car was not taxed and had no insurance displayed.

The gardai carried out a roadside drugs test and the driver tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. He was arrested on the spot and a blood sample was later taken to be sent off for analysis.

Gardai seized the car under section 41 of the Road Traffic Act and the man is due to appear at an upcoming sitting of Kilkenny District Court to answer charges.

In a second incident on Tuesday evening, gardai on another Covid-19 patrol near Piltown noticed a car driving erratically and signalled to the driver to pull in.

Gardai noticed a smell of alcohol coming from the car and conducted a roadside breath test. The test came back with a reading of 117mg which is four-times the legal driving limit.

The driver was arrested for drink driving and is due to appear in court.

Kilkenny gardai again urged memebers of the public to “never drive while under the influence of an intoxicant,” and to “stay at home and stay safe” over the June Bank Holiday weekend.
