WEATHER FORECAST: A touch of frost as cold snap hits Kilkenny
Our relatively mild winter is set to change fairly dramatically this week as a cold snap hits Kilkenny and the rest of the country.
Met Éireann said temperatures will plummet to as low as -2 degrees this week as eight western countries were issued with a rainfall warning for today and tomorrow.
Today will start out dry but cloud and rain will develop across the southwest, west and northwest by noon.
Rain will spread across Connacht and Ulster throughout the day becoming persistent and heavy – with temperatures reaching 11 degrees.
Met Éireann said: “Monday will start off mainly dry with some bright spells. Cloud will increase and rain will develop in the southwest, west and northwest by noon.
“It will spread across much of Connacht and Ulster and become persistent and heavy at times. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees with freshening southerly winds.”
Tomorrow is set to bring heavy and persistent rain in the western half of the country – with a risk of localised flooding. The showers in the west are set to extend eastward throughout the day – with clear spells and a few showers expected tomorrow night.
Temperatures are set to drop to 0C again on Tuesday night – but will not plummet below zero until Wednesday.
Met Éireann added: “Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with persistent or heavy rain over the western half of the country and a risk of localised flooding.
“There’ll be some showers further east. The rain in the west will extend eastwards through the afternoon and evening with clear spells and a few showers following on Tuesday night.
“Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees with fresh southerly winds, becoming westerly and easing as rain clears. The night will be cold with lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees.”
Wednesday is set to begin with sunny spells and a few light showers near the west and north coastal areas. Temperatures are set to hit highs of 7 to 9 degrees.
Met Eireann said: “Wednesday will be mainly dry with sunny spells and perhaps a few light showers near west and north coasts.”
