WEEKEND WEATHER: Warning amid forecasts of ‘snow showers’ and ‘thunder’

Kilkenny motorists have been urged to drive  slowly and safely as Met Éireann warned there is a risk of “snow showers” and “thunder” this weekend.

The thick blanket of fog that covered the county and most of the country yesterday will continue to hang over Ireland this morning, making driving conditions treacherous in parts.

However, the fog will clear later in the morning to give way to a mostly dry, if cloudy, day.

Forecasters have said there is a risk of snow in parts of Munster, Connacht and Ulster on Sunday.

They also said there is a risk of thunder occurring in coastal areas on Sunday night – with temperatures dropping to minus degrees in parts.

Met Éireann described Sunday as: “Cold, with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, most of the showers in Connacht, west Ulster and west Munster, some turning to sleet later, with a risk of snow showers, mainly over high ground in the west and north.

“Sunday night will be very cold, with clear spells and scattered showers, most of them in the western half of the country.

“Many of the showers will be wintry and there is a risk of thunder, mainly in Atlantic coastal areas.”
