Worrying shortage of family doctors in Kilkenny, new research reveals
KILKENNY has one of the lowest levels of GPs in the entire country.
There are just 0.61 registered doctors per 1,000 people in the county, well over a third the recommended number, which is 1 per 1,000.
The findings are contained in research published by the Medical Council last week.
It undertook the research in a bid to discover why many GPs have quit the Irish register.
The research found many have left the country to practice in the UK, Australia and other countries.
