100/100: Kilkenny-based film gets perfect score from world’s top movie site

The latest feature-length animation from Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon continues to woo critics and audiences alike – and now it’s received a perfect viewer rating on the world’s foremost online movie site.

Wolfwalkers is registering a 100% audience score on the movie buffs’ favourite website Rotten Tomatoes just days after its release on an international streaming service.

The incredible score could see the critically-acclaimed feature vie for the greatest film ever as adjudicated by the site as it has passed the magic mark of 40 reviews and has a 100% audience score and 98% score on the Tomatometer (experts’ view).

Rotten Tomatoes said the film, released last Friday on the streaming platform Apple TV, is “a mesmerizing Celtic-inspired adventure”.

It adds: “Wolfwalkers offers an epic ethereal fantasy matched by profound philosophies and stellar voice work.”

So far, the film has received 169 reviews on the site, each one more glowing with praise than the previous.

The latest accolades follow on from a rarely seen 5-star review from The Guardian newspaper, as well as being named the best animated film of 2020 by the BBC.

“A masterpiece,” is how The Guardian’s Wendy Ide described the film.

“It’s exquisite,” she mused, “steeped in earth magic and ancient lore, it’s the kind of film that effortlessly repays repeated viewings.”.

The BBC said of the Kilkenny-based feature: “The year’s finest animated film doesn’t come from Dreamworks or Pixar but from Cartoon Saloon, an Irish studio specialising in Celtic folklore and stylised hand-drawn 2D art.”
