BREAKING: Thugs tried to set fire to Kilkenny home while family were inside

A FAMILY in Kilkenny city had a lucky escape after thugs tried to set fire to their house.

The shocking incident occurred in the O’Loughlin Court area of the city in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Papers and a rag were stuffed through the letterbox in the front door and set alight.

Fortunately, the paper burned out and the rag failed to ignite. A local Garda source said there was no sign of any flammable liquids used.

Minor damage was caused to the door and hall floor inside the house. It is understood the family were inside the house at the time, but nobody was injured in the incident.

All the material at the scene was recovered by the gardai and was sent for forensic examination.

Gardai are investigating the attempted arson attack. They have urged any potential eyewitnesses or anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056 777 5000.
