Council urges CIE to get off tracks and give green light to €8m Kilkenny Greenway
By COLIN BARTLEY
WORK on the €8 million Kilkenny Greenway project may be delayed as Kilkenny County Council waits for the landowners to abandon the land.
The council is asking State company CIE to give up the 24km stretch of disused rail-line to enable the construction of the Greenway.
Members of the Piltown Municipal District agreed it would be better to own the land on which the Greenway will run, rather than taking a 20-year lease on the rail line.
The council said it will contact CIE to try to arrange the handover.
As previously reported by KilkennyNow.ie, this process is expected to take much longer to complete than leasing the land from CIE.
KilkennyNow.ie contacted both CIE and Kilkenny County Council for comment, but no response has yet been forthcoming.
The 24-kilometre greenway will link New Ross in Wexford to Ferrybank and Waterford city, with the vast majority of the route going through South Kilkenny.
