By COLIN BARTLEY
A KILKENNY pensioner was assaulted in a random attack while out walking in Kilkenny city over the weekend.
The incident occurred as the 71-year-old man was walking in the John’s Green area of the city at around 9pm on Saturday.
While walking, the man noticed a group of youths cycling around the area at the time, one of them was holding an object he believed to be a big stick.
The man tried to avoid the youths, but as he passed them he was forcefully struck by an object on the back of his head.
The dazed pensioner did not know what hit him or who hit him, but decided to get away from the area as fast as he could.
He made it home without further incident and immediately contacted the gardai. Although he was struck hard in the head, it is understood he did not require hospital treatment.
Gardai are appealing to anyone who was in the area at that time who may have seen the assault or recall seeing youths on bikes in the area at that time to come forward.
They are also asking people with dashcams who may have been in the area around that time to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056 777 5000.
