A GROUP of Kilkenny students representing Ireland at an international legal competition in New York has picked up the award for being the most professional team.

The 18 girls from Presentation Secondary School in Kilkenny have been awarded the Peter Meyers Spirit of Empire trophy, awarded to the team exhibiting the highest values of civility and professionalism throughout the competition.

The girls were flying the flag for Ireland at the Empire Law Mock Trials competition, which took place in New York over the past number of days. Among the nations competing against the Presentation girls were teams from Canada, Australia, China, South Korea, the UK and the US.

Delighted Principal Shane Hallahan praised the girls and their teachers for their efforts.

He said: “Again, our students have done us proud and we are thrilled with their achievement. Congrats and huge thanks to our teachers, Ms Campion, Ms Brophy and Ms Cotter who prepared them so well for this prestigious competition.”

The Presentation girls secured the trip to New York after winning the Irish finals at the Criminal Courts in Dublin in May, sweeping the board winning the overall prize, the best witness prize and best barrister award.
